Coming back from a four-day weekend, we started off the week by looking at photos that represented our past week worldwide. This week we focused on finishing up our first phase of the semester. All of our "Picture Says a Thousand Words" final drafts are done for Dorothea Lange's photography. We are now in the process of working on the same project, but with our own photographs. In Humanities, we finished our writing pieces for that project and finished reading Of Mice and Men. In Chemistry, we coated more papers with emulsion, printed out some of the negatives of the pictures we took for our "Picture Says a Thousand Words", and actually started developing our own photos. We came across some difficulties with the papers, lighting, and emulsion and the photos did not really turn out the way we wanted. Andrew tested different variations of making these photographs and finally figured that the photos look smooth and visible on smooth paper and on glass. We now have different options on how we will develop our photographs, but are still going through the learning process.

Like every other week, we started off by looking at photos from the past week. We planned out photos we were going to take on our field trip to Balboa Park and went there on Tuesday. We visited the Museum of Photographic Arts and walked around the area to take some photos. Our goal was to capture humanity for our next "Picture Says a Thousand Words" project. In Humanities, we started writing our pieces for our own photography and continued reading Of Mice and Men. We continued coating our photo paper during Chemistry to prepare a paper for each person in our class. Here are my finished assignments!
The Super Bowl was this weekend, so we began by looking at photos taken during the game. This week we had a photoshop workshop to learn how to enhance the photos we have already taken. We also worked on creating a class Instagram to share our photos and show what we are working on. We were also introduced to our "Human Struggle" project, which would be capturing a representation of humanity and ourselves. We brainstormed locations of places we wanted to capture meaningful photos. In Humanities, we finished our first draft of "Picture Says a Thousand Words" for Dorothea Lange's photography and continued to chapter two of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. We discussed chapter two as a class and identified the characters. In Chemistry, we started making our photo paper that we would be using to develop our photos by coating our paper with emulsion and Andrew told us that we would be experimenting more with light other than developing pictures. Here are my assignments from this week!
Per usual, we started Monday by analyzing photos that summarized the past week worldwide, this time they were focused on portraits. This week, we experimented with taking even more photos outside and worked on their composition; the subject, surroundings, and positioning. In humanities, we started our "Picture Says a Thousand Words" writing pieces for one of Dorothea Lange's photographs and critiqued each other's writing pieces. We are writing five 200-word perspectives that show the significance of the photo through many different meanings. We also started reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, who was introduced as one of the best authors by Mike. During Chemistry, we started forming our darkroom in Andrew's classroom and began building our apparatus we would use to make photo emulsion. Read below to see what we have gotten done this week!
